Vaughn said he is glad to be employed, though he has yet to see a contract, and is looking forward to the growth and development plan the board will be discussing at future meetings. "I have no problem, in fact, I'm pleased to hear the board say.

they're behind an initiative to growth and development. That's been lacking as a general initiative on the part of the board," he said. Vaughn said there is much work to be done but that he is ready to "press and to "dispel foolish, unwarranted notions." A survey designed to measure morale among career center employees indicated employees feel CHURCHES PAGE 1A FROM PAGE 1A "It's a very exciting time, but it's also a time of great sacrifice," Ellis said. To ease the transition, the two parishes have already combined their youth groups, Hispanic ministry, community building committees and several classes. Carboy said he and the other priests, the Revs.

Charles Aschmann and Alistair McKay, are encouraging parishioners to attend mass at either church. "We encourage people from the pulpit," he said. "I'll say, 'go over to St. Jude's next week and say hello." Alice Ingram attends St. Jude's, which was founded in 1939, but has visited St.

Anne's over the years. She said the prospect of uniting the parishes. has caused some concern. "We've got a lot of old parishioners, and I don't mean age- wise, I mean they've been members of whichever church for a long time," she said. "Perhaps their children have been married there or they were baptized there.

It's really very hard to let go." Even so, Ingram said it is obvious that the priest shortage will eventually affect the Sumter parishes. "I am able to separate myself and really look at the broader picture," she said. "We're growing in they are not dealt with fairly and that administrators show favoritism to select employees. Another major issue of concern among employees is discipline, which they indicate is not being dealt with in an appropriate manner. The career center has been under fire recently with county council members debating whether to fund the center or turn it over to the school districts.

Eventually, council voted along party lines to include the center in its budget. Board member Jo White declined to comment. Other members were not available for comment after the meeting and did not immediately 1 return calls. Contact Staff Writer Krista Pierce at or 800 774-1272. BROWN numbers.

Priests are less and less and you have to think of that. If each were to stick to their guns, we may end up with no priest at either one. The alternative to is, well, let's look to the future." Beth Brinkley attends St. Anne's, but like Ingram, has visited St. Jude's and said she sees the parishioners of both churches growing more familiar with each other.

"We're all Catholics," she said. "I have no qualms about combining the parishes." Carboy said the next phase of planning includes hiring an architect to begin a layout for the campus and design a church. "Can you just picture it? Wow! A new church with the schools and the rectory, everything all in one, all new and all beautiful," Ingram said. "The younger people will benefit from all this." The land purchased for the location of the unified church brings Sumter's Catholic community closer to its roots. In 1838, the first Catholic church in Sumter, Our Lady of Assumption, was erected in Dalzell, not far from the site where the new church will be erected.

"Some people in the church said it's not coincidence, it's Godincidence," Brinkley said. Contact Staff Writer Krista Pierce at or 803-774-1272. EEOC files suit against Goose Creek company over racial complaint CHARLESTON (AP) The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued JW Aluminum Co. alleging a black worker at the Goose Creek company was subjected to a racially hostile work environment. The EEOC filed the complaint on behalf of Reginald Kelly, who once worked as an equipment operator for the aluminum company.

The company denied the allegation and said it would fight the suit. The federal agency, which enforces civil rights laws in the work place, said the names of other workers might be added to the complaint filed last week in U.S. District Court in Charleston. The suit alleges Kelly and other black workers were harassed with derogatory graffiti and racial slurs since at least 1995. The EEOC alleged the company violated the Civil Rights Act prohibiting employers from discriminating based on race, color, religion, gender or national origin.

The federal agency said it sued after attempts to settle out of court were unsuccessful. The EEOC is seeking a permanent injunction against the company and unspecified damages. Don E. Kassing, the company's president and chief operating officer, said he is confident the allegations are baseless. "I've met personally with every employee, and I've never heard race come up as an issue in those meetings," said Kassing, who has been president for about 18 months and joined the company after Kelly left.

Kelly's departure was not related to the alleged harassment, the EEOC said.
