With a unique art style and addictive background score that goes perfectly with the storyline, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has kept otakus hooked for over 35 years. Due to its distinct and unusual take on the Shonen genre, Hirohiko Araki has established himself as one of the greatest storytellers of this generation.

The mangaka has been supported by ardent followers, who resonate the same passion that motivates them to stray away from the preconceived rules and regulations.
On the one hand, Araki-Sensei is immensely proud of having a magnum opus that has become a genre of its own. On the other hand, he has one massive regret that showcases his immaturity as a person, which still lingers and makes him feel embarrassed.
Hirohiko Araki was embarrassed by his pre-JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure work
Much of the Otaku community knows Hirohiko Araki for his most popular work, Jojo Bizarre Adventure, which probably stands out the most in the anime and manga industry for its intriguing battles, pop culture references, and being true to its title, that is absolutely “bizarre.”

The series, which began in 1987, has been a massive hit that has been partly responsible for making the art form infectiously popular overseas. This has been solely because of how the mangaka loves to experiment with the colors and the scenes, which often lead to characters and wacky poses that leave a lasting impact on the viewers.

However, the Otaku community will be taken aback when they learn that this idea of experimentation arose from a not-so-popular work, the Araki-Sensei, which is too flustered to talk about. In 1985, the mangaka came up with a manga called Gōjasu Airin, popularly known as Gorgeous Irene, which was about a shapeshifting assassin who possessed some captivating powers.

The title was short-lived not because it was a prototype work, but because it is an embodiment of a work that the author is embarrassed about. Throughout the work, he provided tons of stereotypes, which ranged from her powers being activated by doing makeup and providing an unasked quantity of fanservice to its readers.

The work is so humiliating that Araki-Sensei told in the 2007 Eureka Special Issue via Tumblr how it was his most immature work and some he did when he was “ignorant of women.” He realized his mistake only after getting married, and he made up for his mistakes in his later work, which became one of the most popular works of fiction around the world.
Hirohiko Araki was impressed as AI perfectly copies “personal elements” of his magnum opus
If the Shonen genre is a school, then Hirohiko Araki would indeed be the most popular child. Thanks to his incredibly stylish characters, giving the world some of the most iconic protagonists and antagonists that remain fan favorites even after so many years.

The legendary mangaka, who broke the stereotype of anonymity and showed the world how his manga would stand apart in the pool of Shonen titles, was impressed by how Artificial Intelligence (AI) replicated his work.
During an exclusive interview in 2024 with New Manga Techniques via AnimeHunch, he expressed his concerning views on how he was “shocked to find out” one of his drawings was perfectly recreated by AI, which made it nearly impossible to tell the work was not his. He said,
Recently, I came across a drawing and thought. ‘This is something I drew, right?’ I was shocked to find out it was actually created by Al. When I draw manga, I add subtle, personal elements that make the work uniquely mine. This AI-generated piece even mimicked details like the way I draw eyelashes, so precisely that it was almost impossible to tell it apart from my work.
Araki-Sensei added how there were some minor differences that allowed him to distinguish between the two pieces of art, but expressed his concerns about authenticity and a world dominated by “fraudsters.” While he continues to captivate the world with his work, his comments for our future world have raised serious alarms.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012) can be rented on AppleTV.
